Honorable Mention Small Pox Kathy Paupore A visitor kindled horror with the ignorance of his burning body a bowl of broth kindly shared spread illness unknown families seperated in treatment were lost to the spirits in death. She held her infant brother tight as he drew his last heart's breath, she thought of soft feet and clenched fists, her aching arms still cradled the shape of him after he was taken from her warmth, a crow croaked three times, grief came disguised as disease and left behind a fever of demise. Who would carry the baby westward into the next life? With no remembrance one culture gives way to the next. (inspired by the writings of Loiuse Erdrich)
